How to Protect Your Small Business from Cyber Attacks in Sri Lanka

Small businesses are targeted precisely because attackers assume they have weak defences. The good news: most attacks are stopped by a handful of affordable, practical steps.

1. Strong, unique passwords and 2FA

Reused passwords are the single most common way businesses get breached. Use a password manager and turn on two-factor authentication everywhere — email, hosting, banking and social accounts.

2. Keep everything updated

Outdated websites, plugins, servers and computers are the easiest targets. Updates close known holes attackers actively scan for.

3. Daily backups you have tested

Ransomware is survivable if you have clean, recent, off-site backups — and have actually tested that you can restore them. A backup you have never tested is just hope.

4. A firewall and a hardened website

A properly configured firewall and a hardened, monitored website block the automated bot attacks that make up most threats. This is exactly the kind of thing a "secure-first" setup handles by default.

5. Train your team

Most breaches start with a person clicking a fake email. A short briefing on phishing, fake invoices and suspicious links prevents the majority of incidents.

6. Limit access

Give staff only the access they need. When someone leaves, revoke it the same day.

7. Have a plan

Know who to call and what to do if something happens. Speed of response decides how bad an incident becomes.
